Heroes 3: Horn of the Abyss

My first attempt to draw a map from scratch. No fly or DD, strategic positionning of 48 towns and six pairs of monoliths, were complemented with a buffed AI to make this map a constant squirmish. Expect to spend many weeks before you can expand beyond your starting area.

Too Simple with diplomacy if you start fast - The Red Tent
Hello,
I think this may be making sense to give the AIs more towns or stronger heroes to start.
Otherwise, it is too simple.

Basically (spoilers)
1. Got 6 towns on the first week by moving troops on the initial locations
2. Built a stack of haspids in the middle of month 2, got the box for rust dragons, killed tan hero with 200 black dragons (100+ haspids, 65 rusts, equal stats)
3. Got 3 heroes with diplomacy (2 scouts and a logists) and joined 1500 black dragons, 500 azure dragons and 400 archangels (killed blue as well) by the end of month 2
4. Got the box for 4000 titans and 5000 archangels just to see what is there. Gave up as the difference in the army is too big.

Dear Friends, I wanted to review my original version of this map but my file is corrupted.

In the second version there is a Pandora Box just in front of your starting town and Dessa is there, with a legion of Ancient Behemoths. The original one doesn't have it.

Sorry, my editor is crashing when I try to open the map and I completely forgot about that. Are you using the Scouting specialists? I remember the tents that give access to rough terrain were hidden but have no idea where.
Anyway, that map is not very good. Try my Power Castle Forever for a better experience.
I tried some stuff on that one that end up screwing playability.

By the way I think this would be a great map with some modifications. Here's my feedback.

The main opponents are too slow in building up... they spend too much time picking up random trinkets. Give them a boost by perhaps allowing them to start with control of all the towns in their centre.

Next point relates to the treasuries, there's like 5 rampart towns with treauries. 50% interest is too much and too easy! I'd disable treasuries on all but perhaps one.

Amassing ungodly armies using diplomacy was a little too easy. I'd limit diplomacy to one hero. I'd cut down the number of level 7/8 neutral monsters by at least 50%. I'd give opponents diplomacy as well. I'd also cut down the number of pandora's boxes by at least 50%, maybe more like 75% even.

The end game boss - after a certain point- maybe after month 2 - I would unleash him and let him give the player a challenge instead of keeping him a stationary sitting duck. I'd even give him DD so they can bolt around the map and give you real trouble.

otherwise, clearly a lot of hard work went into this. Thank you so much!

Thanks, you touched every single point I think end up screwing the second version of the map. In my opinion the first one end up being better.
Curious thing, in the first one there were more or less the same number of boxes but about 75% were empty and that was the main reason I gave myself the trouble of making a second version. I didn't work as I was expecting...
I'm completely fascinated by Diplomacy, all my maps abuse it to the most extreme... But in the Witcher and Power Castle the number of heroes with it is up to you to decide.
My drawing abilities are behind repair but my single player templates are awesome, check those if you please.

Ok, there is no time limit in the map but teal has a ton of Ancient Behemoths and Cyclop Kings and really gigantic bonus to their growth, it is possible his numbers are crashing the game. I never hit the end turn button that number of times, I'm pretty sure in all my tests it was possible to do it before that time.
In fact, I was sure something like that would happen if you took too many months but thought it was much more. Now, at least we have a time... It's month 8.
I'm pretty sure you can do it much better if you try another time.

119 days - 376 score - The Red Tent
Good and fun map, I took calmly the map and was capturing everything I could except near the end.

The major problems were a blue hero in the 3rd week which summoned ~200 fire elementals and I spent some days with hit-run tactics and a heavy conflux hero with nearly the triple of creatures that I had in the middle of the 2nd month.
At the 3rd month the enemies didnt sent anything in a while and they were never a real menace fordward.
Rampart, Tower and Barbarian never sent a big army before I was more strong than them.
The order of defeated was Inferno , Conflux, Barbarian, Walrock and Tower, Castle and Rampart in the last weeks.
I played an old version that haven't the pandora and behemoth battle, maybe I play again the map.

If you play with the Necromancer + Cloak of the Undead king - then the map is totally not balanced. You will with few hundred thousand liches overwhelm everything on the map easily. Sadly I came to this stand after playing this map few days.

I think the total just from the golems guarding the resource piles is close to 1 million but I usually sell them to buy the azure dragons joining for money.
It's not ballanced at all, that was never my purpose, it's tricky and you need good pace but I wasn't worry about balance, I was focused on the fun I was having, sorry if that doesn't work like that for you.

1. you need to split the sourceresses like, 1,1,1,1, the rest,assids,sea dogs. Then you need to cast slow and trick the golems to move to reach your assids, that you always maintain a square from all of them. It will take several attempts till you get it.

Until beginning of month 4 when I had the courage to open the Pandora box in underground where I got 1000 AA and 800 Titans.. way too big bonus and way too easy to win after that.

Yes, my idea was to make the difficulty of the map depend on the capacity to take gigantic battles early.
The better you play the easier it gets. After that one you can safely take the entire underground and everything else.
Nowadays I usually play it just till I beat Blue, Tan and Green, by this order. Do you think the map gets boring like this? Cause from all I know of Homm3 it is impossible to make a map where player doesn't get OP near the end, so I didn't even tried. It is hard till some point, then you can get the grail and finish, quite easily. Any suggestion on how this could work differently?

I think that the AI setup works perfectly well, with the challenging charges (when not using save/load) and the superior tan underground.

I simply think you should adjust the pandora box bonus... especially the one that is reachable from the entry point + town portal.. where I got 800 titans and 1000 AA, just maybe make it somewhere between 150-250 of each, whatever is most balanced.

After that I think it could be exciting as a player, trying to go deeper into tans territory and find other boxes.

Good map and idea, bit easy - The Red Tent
Perhaps it depends on how it plays out but found it too easy. Corkes with only some Archangels and Haspids and Iron Fist of Ogre just rolled over everything. Directly attacked the 7th level creature then they committed sucicide against the counterstrike. Had 200 haspids when I ran into King Minos no sweat at all. Tan gone end of month 2. Just a few weak heroes invaded the home territory. Creatures in the Pandora boxes just seems like overkill. Other thing was most of the AI except Tan were out of Mana. 3 AIs left to go end of month 3 but Corkes at 99 all skills and almost 400 haspids don't think there'll be much challenge. Might play it again giving a teak to boast the AI, give them more built up cities from the start.

One thing I think would work better, gonna try it myself, would be to give all AI heroes boots and gloves, a small boost to starting armies and put wells near the portals.
If you give all five towns to the guys on the surface you would want to do the same for Tan (or maybe just 5 but all with the grails like the one they now start with) and I doubt many people could beat that.

If you get this message just ignore it. The map has too many external dwellings (taking advantage of the HotA feature allowing unlimited dwellings) and too few heroes available to hire, so that AI defeated heroes cycle often. It works fine despise the message.

1. Restart. Restart if you a useless artigact, restart if Bidley come with few corsairs, etc... Then save and load to get just resource heroes, 8 day 1 or 2; then restart everytime you learn something new, like: ok these guys always join. Second, use Octavia's Scholar to transfer the spells to other heroes. Split armies to take all towns in a few days. I usually can take them all day 6.
Third don't spend your money on town creatures use it to get the ones joining for money, bet on angels, giants and firebirds and their upgrades.
Don't bet on Necromancy early, I usually take at least a month to get the Cloack.
Get Water on everyone and get a ton of special heroes (Dessa, Gelu, Dracon, Miriam) with Scouting and Diplomacy, build mage guilds preferably to upgrades.

Dont waste your time, dont collect pandora's box and big army. Conquer fast as possible dungeon land - confuse him by seize town by town. His power are many towns and creatures dwelling. He can grow up to 100 black dragons per week. When you steal from his territory - you steal from his power :) And let go your second hero to seize at least one castle from all other AI. Confuse they again with many weak heroes (collecting stupid dwellings)

Tips (continuing) - The Red Tent

You probably can't take Minos early, so you have to escape from the underground as soon as possible. I get at least three heroes with boots and gloves and Expert Logistics, one more with at least one of these.
Then wait with Corkes in front of the Subterranean Gate and after beating the Black Dragons, if they are still there, go up and take the town, TP other heroes and go to the left and the right, the one going to the right has to have full movement with just fast creatures plus boots and gloves, the one going to the left can be a little short. TP everyone back. I can use other heroes to map the surrounding area but flee before exhausting movement, generally anyone remaining in the underground is a goner.
You next day TP to the town in the left to go for Castle area or alternatively to the right for Inferno. Castle is easier to find and, in my opinion more useful.
In every enemy area in the surface there is a well guarded Orb of Vulnerability, with it it's way easier to beat Minos.
Going down from the first dungeon you will find two pandora boxes protect buy the classic red guard. The one in the left is guarded by 1000 Archangels and 1000 Titans and between other things gives you 200 Archangels and Titans. The one to the right is guarded by 5000 Archangels and 4000 Titans and besides other bonus gives 1000 Archangels and 800 Titans. With these I usually find quite easy to beat Tan.

The Red Tent walkthrough

Gigantic single-player map for Cove lovers.
Finnish in less then 5 months with heroes of level 72 (capped) and 99 in all primary skills, plus armies of thousands of Azure Dragons and level seven creatures but still have an hard time doing many battles.
Always get the Grail without having to stall for weeks or find out it was just in front of your most distant adversary starting town.
Play with optimized heroes against optimized opponents.
Really make use of the enhanced Scouting skill to early finish a map.
Fight an AI that can't screw development, has always much more money and resources then needed and gets a ton of extra troops but it's still manageable if you play right.
Make good use of Diplomacy without feeling it OP until much latter on.
