Equi 3.6 HD test - Rise of an Empire of Heroes 3.2 - Heroes 4 map

I actually *finished* the map playing as Cove on Rook difficulty. I often purposefully pick a lower difficulty because I really enjoy exploring, so I am not going to comment on the difficulty of the map.

I thoroughly enjoyed this map. Was a great map for multiple heroes to head out and all become powerful. Balanced, though tracking down some of the tents got a little frustrating. Took me just over 10 months to win!

Excellent balanced map. The only thing what makes it nufair is sea portals. I believe those portals are not necesssary and makes play rather unfair, expecially for weaker factions; fortress and inferno.

TP Shrine - Lich King of Eldoria
Hi Erik,

Do you think that maybe the shrine at 213:63 is too easily accessible? All the player needs is a decent powerstack and forgetfulness to deal with the guards. Probably achievable by month 2, definitely - by month 3. I'd suggest changing it up a bit (add requirements to enter, strengthen guard or just change the spell), otherwise it's quite a big shortcut to TP.

Map Updated - Lich King of Eldoria
Map has been updated to the latest version. A few of the updates from previous versions:
- Non-pink computer AI has been boosted to be more competitive, especially early game
- A few inaccessible areas fixed
- Useless skills have been disabled and changed in heroes with these starting skills (learning, first aid, eagle eye)
- A few other various balance changes and bug fixes

Finished, great map - Lich King of Eldoria
Hi there!

I've already covered most issues with difficulty in my previous comment. Finished in 7 months. Everything I said before still stands. AI really needs a much bigger and earlier boost. For example most of AI opponents were still in their starting positions when I came for them. The first to go was teal, and I confused his main hero for a sidekick with 1-2 weeks worth of reinforcements... And he had no other heroes with armies... Others had equally pathetic armies and all of them (except for the red) never took control of their native towns. Basically the only active player was red, and he had a somewhat decent army comparing to others, but still I didn't have to bring anything but 500 wyverns to beat his main hero.

Basically the game becomes a cakewalk once you get first big creature boost. For me it was +200 wyvern quest by the end of month 2.

However, bigger guards in the very beginning are still annoying, and overall bigger guards screw up AI and they just don't do much of anything. They just wait for their fate in the face of a player hero to come and hand it to them.

Pink was also extremely easy to deal with when I dealt with all of the rest and boosted my stats on the map. I had an armorer specialist with 90+ stats, with 200+ AAs against pink heroes having stats under 50, and it was as one-sided as it can be. Didn't even need to bring any more forces, which I could.

Overall, it's a great map with great ideas, but a bit too difficult in 1st 2-3 weeks whereas too easy later on. The former can be helped by reducing a couple of key guards (cutting players off from early-game expansion), while the latter can be helped by giving AI a boost from the day 1 or 8, and only significantly ramping it up by month 5 or maybe even earlier.

There are a few other issues that I noticed:

1. Misplaced guard 78:102
2. Can't reach 112:183, 117:179
3. Portal blocked 31:41

Also it would be great to disable plague/creature month. First, Nagash (as it was already mentioned) may get stuck. Second, creatures are needed for many quests, an untimely plague can slow down the progress towards them dramatically. It really doesn't add anything of value to the game, in my opinion.

Once again thank you for your map though. It was a lot of fun to play regardless of the difficulty issues. Hope to see more again in the future :)

I really appreciate the in-depth and thorough feedback and review. I'll take many of these items into consideration in the next version of the map.

I enjoy a grind and struggle early on in maps, so I've incorporated that into this map as you've noted. I've played a lot of maps that were too open for my taste and snowballs too quickly.

I've come to realize that the computer unfortunately has a difficult time navigating maps with key masters tents and gates, so will likely reduce those if I do another map in the future. I've had hugely varying results with computer strength in this map, the several times I've tested it. Unfortunately it seems to be random- I'm going to go ahead and boost starting town growth for computer players early on as you've recommended and hope they're able to navigate their way to their other towns.

Depending on feedback from others as well I'll boost Lich King stats and potentially creature growth (without making it too long!)

Again, I really appreciate the thorough feedback and considerations!

Hi Erik!

Thank you for your map, the entire community and I very much appreciate it.

I started it a month ago, but stopped after about a week when it became clear that the opening phase is going to be either painful or slow (painfully so). I also noticed that starting positions are very much different for each factions.

However, I saw many positive reviews of your map and decided to give it a try again. I played as orange deciding to pick a less favorable start. Red seems to be the easiest with the TP scroll and 2 connected towns right away. Purple is also good but only long term to due access to AAs and the Clone spell not being banned like Resurrect and Blind.

I understand that starting positions may have been intentionally imbalanced to offer different difficulties. I would still suggest disabling Clone and Eovacius to keep Castle start less broken in the midgame and later. Maybe make the Clone spell available through a shrine similarly to how it's done for TP and Resurrect.

Map is excellent design-wise (overall structure, not just looks), the idea behind it is also great, and I'm really enjoying it so far, but there are still a couple of potential issues with it.

Starting relatively fast is very difficult. For example, as an orange on impossible, I cleared almost everything levels 1-3 where I could access during the 1st week, and then I had to basically wait for another week before I was ready to finish basilisk dwellings and go against 20 wyvern monarchs. I also hired Jeremy as my starting main for extra punch with his cannon. Players may also pick Luna or some other hero that gives an edge during early game. I'm afraid, that's basically the only way to progress at an ok pace in the beginning.

To contrast, opponent's difficulty seems to be the opposite, because PC non-pink players don't get any boosts until month 5, at which point the boost is roughly worth 1 week of growth.

For example, in my game, it's month 4 now, and I'm heading with a secondary hero to kill the teal PC. Teal is currently one of 2 opponents still having only a single town. I have 7 towns already, including all 4 fortresses. When the AI boost kicks in, it won't make any difference, I'll still overproduce troops by a lot comparing to AI users.

To summarize, I think, neutral stack sizes around the castle ramp up a bit too fast in difficulty, and I especially wish that road-blocking stacks would be even a bit more easy to at least allow access to greater areas around for looting and not be bottled up within rougly 1 screen of the map :)

At the same time, I'd suggest boosting up the AI players a bit more, probably give a minor boost from week 2 or something, and from month 5 give them a more significant boost.

With that said, I understand that the "perfect" balance doesn't exist and the map was created according to your vision and preference as a player and a map maker. I don't insist on you making your map just like I want it to be :) Just sharing my view with you, and obviously if your view is different, it's perfectly fine to leave everything as it is.

Once again thanks for the map! If I were to forget all the pain I experienced during 1st month of the game trying to progress at an acceptable pace, my game experience has been excellent :)

In the end, I'll post a couple of other issues (or bugs), that prompted me to write here:

1. Probably a minor thing, but some beholder treasuries in the sea are accessible without having to kill their guard:
81:40, 40:46 (have to go through Haspids however), 141:175, 117:183, 52:143:1, 24:131:1, 51:118:1, 167:201, 177:194.

2. A somewhat bigger issue is that shackles at 189:212 can be taken without fighting their guard - 1500 Magic elementals, no joke.

Great map - Lich King of Eldoria
This map is so good and interesting in many ways. It's important to follow seer's huts which can give you good boost in army. You can have more assembled artifacts, some for quests and some for you. Also interesting way to get keymaster's tents. Necro isn't focused on Lich King to be a main hero, but still is challenging fight with their main hero.

Secondary skills - Lich King of Eldoria
Great map, but let me suggest you something: If you ban some secondary skills on the map, you should also ban heroes who have that skill, or better you should change that skill with some other skill in hero settings. For example Adela start with wisdom and diplomacy, diplomacy are banned on the map so you should change diplomacy with water magic and that would be fine. I've seen that on map called "Roads untraveled" where many skills are banned and banned skills are changed in heroes.
